Wedding menu wording should describe the meal guests will actually receive in the order it will be served. Start with your confirmed food list, group it into courses or stations, and choose a layout that leaves the descriptions readable. A 4 × 9 inch card is tall, but its narrow width can make a long dish name wrap unexpectedly.
The examples below are original layout drafts, not a proposed catering menu. Replace the food with the wording approved for your event.
Match the structure to the meal
A seated dinner usually benefits from courses in order. A buffet often reads more clearly as groups of available dishes. Do not copy the order or labels in a template preview when they differ from your actual service.
| Meal format | A useful structure | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Set plated meal | Course heading, dish, short description | Suggesting guests can choose when the meal is fixed |
| Plated meal with choices | Clear options and the actual selection instructions | An unexplained “or” that conflicts with advance selections |
| Buffet | Station or food group, followed by dishes | Numbered courses that imply table service |
| Shared platters | A brief list grouped by how food arrives | A separate paragraph for every accompaniment |
Get the final sequence from the people providing the food. The design should reflect that sequence rather than determine it.

The heading gives the menu a personal context while the dish descriptions stay direct. If a heading and description run together, add spacing before adding more ornament.
Do not label an example dish vegan, gluten-free or suitable for an allergy based on its name. Ask the caterer to provide any dietary wording and confirm its accuracy. A decorative symbol is not a substitute for that confirmation.

This version groups the food instead of implying a separate served course for every line. Keep station names close to the wording used at the venue so guests can match the printed card to what they see.
Fit the longest block first
The Elegant Wedding Menu listing below describes a 4 × 9 inch Canva template. Begin with the section containing the longest dish names. Keep all dish descriptions at a consistent, comfortable size. If one section overflows, simplify the wording with the caterer instead of shrinking only that section.
A practical first pass is a short title, three food blocks and an optional small closing line. Remove the closing line before sacrificing space between courses. Leave production margins and bleed to the actual print provider’s specification; the visible card in a mockup does not establish them.
If you want the menu to match invitations and place cards, compare the coordinated set below and use our wedding stationery checklist. You may not need a second standalone template when your chosen bundle already contains a suitable menu.
Make a separate wording approval copy
Send a plain-text draft for food and spelling approval before spending time on final typography. Then compare the approved wording with the exported design, line by line. Confirm that the order, options and descriptions survived editing.
Keep editable and exported files separately. If there are different versions for tables or guests, give them clear names and verify the correct version is being sent. We have not downloaded these templates or tested printed output; an attractive preview is a starting point for selecting a file, not proof of its final production quality.
